IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN COLLEGES
Physical Education in viewed as a discipline which brings within its purview the development of motor skills associated with such physical activities as games, sports, gymnastics, dance, swimming and so on. It combines such general objectives as body development and fitness which includes sports skills, health emotional and social behaviour. The importance of physical Education today is its direct link with academic learning. A healthy, Physically active student is more likely to be, academically motivated.
Therefore it is mandatory to have regular physical Education activities in all the educational institutions throughout the year. The Government in keen on bringing Physical Education compulsory to every child. A sports university is also established in Tamilnadu.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES IN PONJESLY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING 2010 -2011
TABLE TENNIS
The activity started with an All IndiaTable Tennis Tournament conducted by Ponjesly College of Engineering in the month of May 2010. The participants were from all age groups starting from 8 years for both boys and girls. Even veteran players above 40 years upto the age of 69 years participated in the tournament. This is a National level competition and top level players participated from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichi, Trivandrum, Trichur and Ernakulam. There were nearly 250 players participated in this tournament.
CHESS
A chess tournament was conducted in the month of June 2010. This category was under 15 years of age for both boys and girls. The participants are only from Tamilnadu. This is a state level competition. This was conducted for 7 days in the campus. The top 4 prize winners were selected to represent the National competitions. There were 300 children participated.
CRICKET
The Ponjesly college of Engineering students participated in the University Competition held at National College of Engineering, Kovilpatti. They Won 3rd place in the University Competition beating Sethu Institute of Technology. There were 47 Engineering College participated in this tournament.
BASKETBALL
The college Basketball Team has won many tournaments in the District level. Presently they are the champion in the district. They are participatng some of the open tournaments also. Recently they participated in an open state level tournament conducted by PSN College of Engineering, Melethidayoor.
More over Mr.Mahesh 3rd year IT student was selected from Anna University, Tirunelveli to participate south zone Inter University Competition held at Annamalai University.
HOCKEY
Mr.Ajit Kumar 2rd year CSE student a member ofthe Kanyakumari District Hockey Team, participated at the Inter District Competition held at Chennai on 18.9.2010. He got selection in the state team and attended a coaching camp.
FOOTBALL
The college Football team was also participated in the University competition at SCAD College of Engineering.
The college Physical Director Mr.N.Sampson Sahayam was appointed in the selection panel of the Football committee for both boys and girls from the Anna University, Tirunelveli. Besides he was taking the Anna University Football team to VIT Vellore for south zone Inter University Competition. The team reached quarter Finals.
WEIGHT LIFTING
A State Weight lifting Competition was conducted in the campus in the month of October 2010. Two of our college students also participated in this tournament, Only selected players from each district were allowed to participate.
Ponjesly College of Engineering participated in the Anna University, Tirunelveli Weight Lifting and Power Lifting Competitiom in October 2010. Mr.NISHANT 2nd Year Computer Science and Engineering student won First place in this competition.
RURAL GAMES
The Ponjesly College of Engnieering has organized Rajakkamangalam panjayat union sports Competition in the campus. The college school and public were participated in those competitions. The games were Volleyball, Throwball, Carron and Chess. Althetic Competitions were conducted for 100 mtrs, Long Jump and High Jump for both men and Women.
CANTEEN
Two vegetarian canteens are in the campus that provides all types of snacks, meals, fruits, juices and ice creams. A stationary shop sells all stationary items, snacks, gift items, greeting cards, toiletries etc.
REPROGRAPHIC CENTRE
The Reprographics Centre undertakes printing and copying. It also provides these services to many other Departments, student organisations. We offer an efficient printing and copying service to suit your needs.
